Myths and Facts About Beauty Products

The beauty industry is full of myths and misunderstandings, especially when it comes to skincare products. And while you shouldn’t completely ignore the tips you’ve gotten from your mother and grandmother over the years, the fact is many of the things you’ve been led to believe are nothing but urban legends. Let’s separate fact from fiction to help you make the best choices for your skin.

Myth: You don’t need to moisturize if you have oily skin.

Fact: While oily skin may feel slick, the excessive oil (sebum) production you are experiencing could be your body’s way of compensating for dehydration. Using a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer daily (like our PCA and Skinceuticals lines) can actually leave your skin less oily because the rehydration balances out your sebum levels.

Myth: Some topical products work just as well as injectables.

Fact: The bottom line is creams, lotions, and gels work differently than injectables. They can moisturize, introduce antioxidants, exfoliate, and provide sun protection, but only injectable products like Botox penetrate deeply enough to affect your nerves. The best way to maintain the effects of injectables is to use them in tandem with our line of topical products, such as Ex Linea or our post-injection serum from Alastin.

Myth: A tingling sensation after applying a beauty product means it’s working.

Fact: On the contrary, a cool or tingly feeling is your skin responding to irritation and possible inflammation. This may damage your skin’s healing process, worsen scarring, break down collagen and elastin, and increase bacteria growth that could lead to pimples. So think twice before continuing to use a product that makes your skin tingle.

Myth: Blackheads form if the skin is dirty.

Fact: Actually, blackheads have nothing to do with dirt. They develop when hormones increase sebum production, and dead skin cells block the oil from exiting the pore. As the mixture of oil and cellular debris nears the skin’s surface, it oxidizes and turns black. Rather than fiercely scrubbing your skin, the best way to fight blackheads is to exfoliate the pore lining with a salicylic acid product. We can also treat them with a Hydrafacial, or rejuvenate with a chemical peel.

Myth: Your skin acclimates to the products you use, eventually making them less effective.

Fact: If fruits and vegetables are healthy today, they’ll be healthy tomorrow, no matter how often you eat them. The same is true of your skin—as long as you apply healthy products and avoid unprotected sun exposure, your skin will stay healthy. There’s no need to rotate products once you find something that works well for you.
